I've been a DVD Profiler user since 2007. For 13 years. Starting with the Windows version while I had a Windows laptop. Then doing everything I could to get this version working on my Macbook (which it did). As there never came a Mac version.

Then they launched the iOS version and I celebrated it. Until I bought an iPhone X. I already deleted all my Windows stuff from my Mac including DVD Profiler.

Not usable on iOS starting with the iPhone X. The app is completely outdated, looks odd and several functions are not usable on my X. Cancel and Done buttons are not reachable as out of the working screen. Cannot assign collection numbers correctly etc.

No updates to the app for around 3 years. Either the owner of the program is not alive anymore or it has become a scam.

So sorry to say this but after 13 years as a DVD and blu-ray collector (which has become less in the streaming age but still happening) I am sorry to say "goodbye" to DVD profiler. It was once the best program available. Unfortunately no one cares about it anymore :-(

I care about it, so there will be no Macs or iPhones in my future.

Perhaps it was the savings on being able to use a $30 or less program for 13 years, and a free web site and database to go with it, that helped contribute to the purchase of the $1000 iPhone?

For the price of a few DVDs I have used this program and apps for, oh I don't know exactly how long now but it's closing in on two decades. How's that for value?

Good luck with the phone which will be obsolete in a few years and no longer supported by the fruit company.

Not sure what your issues with Apple phones are - you don't need to buy them.

And I love the program, that's why I bought it on Windows and then for iOS.

I really would love to use it for several more years and would be willing to pay again, or subscribe to it or whatever, if it would've been continously supported. But there isn't any. No bug fixing on existing versions (Windows version from 2017, iOS 2018), no new ones either, no further development. That's what I think is very sad because it was a fantastic program that cannot be easily replaced.

Totally agree with all that. But saying that nobody cares, or that it has become a "scam" was unfounded, especially when it is obvious that the company and / or its founder is in serious trouble, but the free forum and web site are being maintained anyway. To me that says that somebody cares about us so much that we are supported, even though they are not surviving, for whatever reason. God bless them.

Taking back that "scam" word, that was indeed unfair. I cannot say anything regarding the situation of the company or the founder. I don't know if someone's in serious trouble, I'm only a customer. I haven't seen any announcement or statement. That would help understanding - "we keep the program alive as long as it's possible but unfortunately it will not be further developed for personal reasons" or so. Staying quiet for years is not the way to go. From my perspective.

In the event DVDP does go away (I hope it doesn't, but all good things...), how does one keep using the program without needing to tap into the online database?

It would be difficult, but Ken has wisely given multiple ways to share collections and profiles. If someone had the resources to host the database (several of us do), and the time and motivation to manage contributions (who?), and the ability to manage and moderate a forum (who?), there could be a modest way of adding, updating and downloading profiles (probably thru a plugin instead of the standard menus).

There is already phpProfiler. It would be helpful to have a plugin that would automatically format for, and upload to, a community web site for publishing.

In the "put up or shut up category," I would certainly be willing to contribute to web resources or to any plugins required, but I wouldn't have the time to do any organization or moderation.

I have mentioned this before. I would also consider being part of a "Save Profiler" consortium that would make some sort of financial offer to Invelos to either acquire rights to the online technology, or acquire equity in Invelos in return for funds that would allow hiring of staff to move forward in a limited way.

what do you think the annual cost to keep the program up and running would be?

id be interested in that as well - i dont have the technical skillset for that, but i assume it would have to do with the amount of active users... something we don't know, although we do know that number is rapidly declining. when we get to that time, i will be happy to donate to find the project, but do not have the time or skills to actively contribute.

If and when the time comes to migrate away from DVDP, I would definitely be interested in something new that has annual costs to maintain the DB.

Again, only if invelos goes away. I love this program because of the flexibility built in. Yes, a few things need to be fixed and/or changed, and obviously are not going to get done.

I have no problem with the fruit company, I own stock in it.

And the same goes for Android phones. In fact they will usually become obsolete and unsupported quicker than Apple phones. Even so I prefer them over iPhones.

My point was only that whatever you buy, at some point it will become obsolete and unsupported. Same thing with DVD Profiler. But considering the service I've been getting all these years I don't have an issue with that, sad as it may be. I think I've already got my money's worth, and then some.

what do you think the annual cost to keep the program up and running would be?

Oh man, the only way I could possibly estimate that would be to break it down into categories, then given any assumptions you wanted to make, you could get a rough idea, for example:

- Assuming you pay for hosting, then estimate pure hosting costs - monthly fee, plus SSL, plus WHOIS, plus anti-virus, plus dedicated IP, plus domain name registration, etc. - est. $1000 USD / year or more (oops forgot we have no SSL - maybe now you know why - it costs money)

- Assuming paid technical staff - make your own estimate of the number of hours of support, web site maintenance, forum moderation and contributions management. Double the hourly rate if you are paying for employee benefits. Make your own assumptions about technical staff hourly rate, and how much can be offset by donated time from users.

- Same for programming support for bugs and new features

- Add fees for legal expenses and corporate registration, taxes and insurance

- Add fees, paperwork and time spent on Amazon and Apple store validation

- Add all the stuff I forgot

I'm willing to bet this could be a minimum  of 2000 USD yearly, not counting technical staff salaries.

If anybody thinks Invelos doesn't care, notice that a lot of these costs are being paid whether or not they are getting new business or making any updates. Somebody is paying it. Every day. Right now.
