I posted this in another thread, but what the heck! I made these shelves myself from Oak plywood and of course taped the edge. Pardon the mess, my wife has decided to redecorate! I didn't make them to the floor because I don't like bending over and prefer the discs at eye level. These shelves go along the back of my TV room and the monitor is on the opposing wall. The room is 16 x 16 and there are two very comfy Lazy boy leather chairs. (oh yeah, and the water cooler and the beer fridge... I am working on training the dogs to run and bring food from the kitchen but they keep eating it before it gets to me)

I've got about 700-800 disks (about 600 entries in profile, the rest are contents of box sets), but because i'm short on space i'm currently making some units, at the moment i've got them on shelves, a DVD unit bought from argos and an earlier unit I made.
The new units are about the size of a free standing kitchen cupboard (500 wide 600 deep, by 640 high excluding wheels, with the bottom about 120mm smaller*), with full extension runners for the 3 drawers.
Each unit should hold about 200 disks, including the box sets and funny tins etc, with even the back ones being easy to get to (my original idea used cheap runners, but you loose about 2 inches of accessible space with them).

I've almost finished the first one, and should be able to make the next one much faster as I spent a fair bit of time making templates for it (I can rough cut with the jigsaw/bandsaw, then run the routers round the templates, using any sheet material to hand/that has the right finish).


*I've got boxed piping running at floor level on one wall so had to make the units to stay flush with the wall (and fit under the worktop/computer desk I'm planning on running along one wall).

Ok. Here's what I've done - and it's allowed me to put my entire 1500+ DVD collection on two standard bookshelf shelves. I just use those CD Binder things - you know those things DJs use to store all their CDs - to store all my DVDs.

When I get a new DVD, I take it out of its case, and slip it into a slot in the binder (I use both an excel spreadsheet and DVD Profiler to keep track of what's where). I also keep a two-ring binder for the jacket-covers ... and all those empty boxes get sold on Craigslist or Ebay when I get about a dozen or so of them. (I do keep a box or two around in case I need 'em.)

Currently for my collection of 850 DVDs (more like 900 cause of collection sets), I have 2 "closet" type cabinets and a standard DVD shelf unit.  I like the cabinets cause I can lock the collection up and also place crap on top of the cabinets.

My shelving... space for just a few more...

i'm a renter, so it's real easy to move them to my next home, just wrap them in plastic wrap, and the DVD's want fall out. i also group them by genre, so if they don't all fit into a room, i can put different genres in different rooms and always know where to find a movie.

I use a great bookcase from IKEA (It's the Billy model with the glass doors in brown--$179 if you're interested). It can hold about 350 DVDs with it and the glass doors are great for seeing what I've got at a glance and keeps the dust out as an added bonus.

The bookshelf by itself is $60 but getting the doors is so worth it.

Also, should I decide to get more I can add the expansion shelf to get room for another 60 or so.

Before I upgraded to the bookcase, I used open shelves too and while they are convenient, they don't show things off nearly as well.

When I get to the point when it's full, I'll simply buy another one as I can stick it right next to the one I have with no wasted space and still be able to open the doors.
