My point was only that whatever you buy, at some point it will become obsolete and unsupported. Same thing with DVD Profiler. But considering the service I've been getting all these years I don't have an issue with that, sad as it may be. I think I've already got my money's worth, and then some. I think that most people are OK with the software getting obsolete, but would welcome some official announcement for it. It's the limbo that's weird, not the fact that they've decided to stop developing it. |

It's the limbo that's weird, not the fact that they've decided to stop developing it. What would you do differently if you had an official announcement? Be careful what you wish for. Where would you go to complain if you got the announcement "we are closing. Goodbye."? Let it be. And I agree with iPatsa - I've got my $29 worth so many times over. It's also not about costing $29 or $29,000. Unless something very urgent and tragic happened, it would've been a nice gesture towards the users to let them know the current status. There isn't much I would do differently than I'm doing today. I've stopped contributing to the server, I keep the installer and all files off-line, not recommending new user to use it and testing alternatives from time to time. I think I would've done more, but long gone are the golden days of Blu-ray and DVDs. |

I find this comment a bit ironic, given your reply to mine This is what I mean with at least hearing back from them, understanding their stand and have a conversation about these issues and new ideas. |

| Posted: | | | | I don't quite understand the people who are saying "Goodbye" to DVD Profiler. Unless you are heavily dependent on using it on your iPhone, it still works well. So why not keep using it while it works.
I can see two roadblocks ahead. 1) The online database goes away. This will cripple Profiler somewhat, but it will still be useable. 2) It becomes incompatible with Windows (Win 10 or whatever). This will happen at some point in time, but hopefully not too soon. Perhaps when MS decides to stop supporting 32 bit applications.
There is of course the possibility that support and development will resume, by Ken or by someone else. It may not seem very likely, but who knows. I thought AnyDVD was dead when Slysoft folded, but RedFox picked up the ball, and it's still supported and developed. The same thing could happen here. Would enough people be willing to pay new (likely more expensive) licenses to make it possible? Perhaps a moot question ...
Anyway, I for one will keep using DVD Profiler as long as it is working. At least unless something even better comes along, which I seriously doubt. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | I for my part would pay again (up to USD 30,--) for the programm if I would see some progress in developing a new version. I own over 6000 DVD/BD/UHD-BD and still buy them so for me it would be fatal if one day, the database goes away. I love this program. | | | Last edited: by chris6667 |

| Posted: | | | | With just under 5,000 profiles at present I could care less if the Invelos online database is available or not. Once I download a profile I update it as I see fit, then locking it down. I never need to download the given profile again and when going to add a new profile I can always do so manually if needed. It doesn't take that long. I also backup my local database on a regular basis making sure every few months that my latest backup is copied to several different systems, including my web space. If I ever need to restore my database I do so locally. I don't need the Invelos online database for that. Am I missing something? What fatal thing is supposed to happen if the Invelos database is taken offline?
To each his own, but I'm not interested in a new version of the application. There's no reason to reinvent the wheel. The application has all the data points I need. I can arrange the layout as I see fit and customize the experience in a number of different ways. There's all sorts of third party plugins and utilities available. There's no online authentification which means all I need is my registration key when going to use the application for the first time after a fresh install. I'm not required to log in to some online account (and maintain a connection to some online server) in order to use the application. If Invelos ever closes up shop I'll be able to continue using the application for as long as I want. Naturally I'm not opposed to Invelos resuming development. At the same time, I see absolutely no reason look for a different solution. Again though, to each his own. | | | My DVD/Blu-ray Collection |

| Posted: | | | | Perhaps Patreon is a solution. I support several initiatives each month with a small amount of money. If enough of us do this, there should be enough money to keep the servers up and running. |

The recent post by QBI2 drew me back to this thread and noticed your post. You might have already done this by now, but the easiest way to answer your question would be to try using the program for a month on a computer that has no internet. I think some things that you take for granted will start failing. The obvious ones are profile contributions and updates, adding new DVDs and the CLT. But some of the internal metadata that the program uses is often refreshed, such as the relationship between Localities and Rating classifications. Third party plugins work only for registered users. Registration information is kept on the server, so if for some reason your PC cookies get trashed (and you forget your password), there will be no way to use the Desktop plugins and advanced features (I think ...). There is probably other stuff I forgot or don't know about. I am thankful for every day that somebody is paying to keep the servers (plus Google and Apple store fees) going and the contributions reviewed and approved. It is not cheap. If money were the problem, I think they would ask for some, and like many others, I would be happy to support them. Something else is probably wrong, and it makes me sad to think about it. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! I've used DVD Profiler offline for thousands of hours over the years. Never encountered any issues. There is no online authentification. There is no logging in to the software. At no time will the application stop working, because it insists on accessing the Internet. If the online servers were to go away tomorrow I'll still be able to perform a fresh install. I'll still be able to register the application. I'll still be able to restore my local database. I'll still be able to add and edit titles locally. I'll still be able to enjoy the mobile apps. (I have mobile devices I'm keeping on lower versions of iOS just for DVD Profiler.) I'll still able to browse my collection online as I host my own DVD Profiler based website. Obviously features that require access to the Invelos online severs will not be available, but I don't need any of those features. Goodbye, DVD Profiler? To each his own, but as far as I'm concerned DVD Profiler is here to stay, online servers or not, active software development or not. And yes, I'd be the first one to pay for the application again or start paying a yearly subscription fee if that meant the product was being actively supported again. There's nothing more I need or want this product to do. I would drop my money down though as a show of support for the product and community as a whole. | | | My DVD/Blu-ray Collection | | | Last edited: by Lowpro |
