| Posted: | | | | Quoting mediadogg: Quote: Ok, so I downloaded your database from your online using the ScrapeGoat tool from BulkEdit (profiles only).
Here is my talley:
3867 DVD Only (x 8GB max) = approx 31 TB 76 DVD+BD (x 58GB max) = approx 4.5 TB 36 4K+BD (x 150GB max) = approx 5.4 TB 283 BD Only (x 50GB max) = approx 14.2 TB
Total approximately 55 TB assuming only 1 disc of each type in the profile, so this is a low estimate of course. Real number is possibly twice as much?
But just for grins, I have two servers with over 55TB each ( one running about half the day from solar, the other is a backup, runs only a few times a month). So those numbers are not crazy.
Cost of 55TB using 8TB drives - Toshiba X300 8TB $200 x 7 = $1400 Cost of 55TB using 14TB drives - Seagate Exos X16 14TB 7200 RPM $300 x 4 = $1200 Cost of 55TB using 18TB drives - Seagate Exos X18 18TB Enterprise HDD $400 x 3 = $1200
All approximations of course. Just did this as a curious exercise, not meaning to start any big fight.
I have seen some people spend as much on cabinets and cases. I have spent even more on DVD and BD Changers for far fewer discs.
I'm just sayin' ... Not sure where you got the number counts for my collection, but they're way off. I have over 3000 Blu-ray releases and close to 300 UHD releases. Individual discs would be more to count for multi-disc sets (e.g. series sets). EDIT: and less than 1200 DVD releases. | | | Last edited: by rdodolak |

Quote: I'm just sayin' ... You should double your cost estimates, because you have to have backups. If you can't/don't want to do backups you should just watch discs/streams and forget the ripping/downloading.
--------------- Yep, you have to factor in cost for backups and ideally you'd want redundancy if a HDD fails, this way you can rebuild the RAID without having to use backups and then recreate a spare set of backups. There's also the hardware cost. |

| Posted: | | | | @rdodolak I have no doubt that I could have made mistakes. After downloading the profiles, I just set filters for DVD Only, etc. and then copied down the number of profiles in the filtered collection. I had considered asking you for the totals, but I didn't think it was fair for me to burden you. The BD and UHD items by far cost the most storage, so if I use your numbers (and incorrectly count 1 disc per release), I get: 3000 x 50 GB = 150TB 300 x 100GB = 30TB 1200 x 8 = 10TB Whole bunch of TB!!!! I have to say though, I am still amazed at how much people spend on physical storage and fancy display cabinets. My 4 Sony changers cost almost $3000 to store 1600 discs. They produce stunning images, but big and obsolete and now can't give them away. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! I've built up my collection over 24 years so the incremental cost over time has been much easier to bite off. HDD sizes are starting to improve, but it's taken a long time to see capacity increases. Once we get to 100+TB drives it will be much less costly, shoot I'd even settle for a 1 PB drive. |

Well, I can tell you that I have 990 dvds and 113 blurays. They are all ripped to .mkv - only the main features, not all the extras (occasionaly I have included the blooper-reel from thing like The Big Bang Theory.) Together with the scanned covers (around 10-15 MB each), it totals 9.7 TB. | | | The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet. (William Gibson) |

| Posted: | | | | @mediadogg, what servers are you using, are you bringing over the entire disc (ISOs?), and what are you using to stream your the content? |

When I started doing it, I got through my (then) ~700 discs in about six months. Using MakeMKV, a dvd-rip usually takes 4-6 minutes (with LibreDrive) and anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes for a BluRay. The covers I scan in 300 dpi as zip-compressed tiff. From then, when I get new discs, they go directly into DVDP (obviously), and in that same go, I rip it and scan the covers, moving it to my NAS. And yes, about every 20 or so, I do make an extra copy to an off-line harddrive. | | | The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet. (William Gibson) | | | Last edited: by Rander |

| Posted: | | | | makemkv? https://www.makemkv.com/
| | | Last edited: by Cpt.Hardy |

| Posted: | | | | Captain, I don't mean to be rude, but this is an English language Forum, and you speak it perfectly well. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make, by making some of us work harder to understand what you are saying. I do care, and I do want to read it. I speak and understand some German language, especially when I'm drinking, my friends always pointed out, but not enough to understand your posts.
Edit: Oh, OK I see when I am in Chrome, I can right-click to see English. Well that is easy enough!
Also, es macht nichts!
Is this better?

| Posted: | | | | Quoting rdodolak: Quote: @mediadogg, what servers are you using, are you bringing over the entire disc (ISOs?), and what are you using to stream your the content? I have only a small fraction of my collection on hard drive. I gave up when Blu-Ray came along. It just took too much time to rip. And in the early days, hard drives were far more expensive, and to compensate I tried to use RAID arrays, which was an absolute nightmare. I could not afford the expensive enterprise drives and quality controllers. I spent most of my life rebuilding corrupt arrays after a thunderstorm. So my strategy now is to use 1 main server, Windows 2012 Essentials where I have about 60TB spinning. Most of my media consists of TV programs and torrent downloaded international pop music videos and TV programs (JPop, Kpop, CPop, etc.). I organize by year, and make backups onto cheap USB drives as the main server drives get low. I also have a backup server, Windows 2011 Essentials, that has more drive space, but I don't keep them spinning. Power it on every now and then. Both servers have the ability to automatically make incremental backups of Windows machines. So all my laptops and desktops are backed up nightly. They also keep massively large Windows File History folders that contain shadow copies of files (prior versions). Current year media downloads onto my torrent machine, which syncs daily with the main server, which has all prior years and family photos, PC backups, etc. So, I usually have at least two copies of everything I care about, and up to three or more copies, some of which have been moved offline to sit in a cabinet. Most of my physical discs are in 4 400 disc Sony changers, 2 DVD (CX995V) and 2 BD (CX7000ES). So I play media from them, and also use VLC Player and Cyberlink PowerDVD for hard drive media. My Plugin LoadDVD allows me to launch media from any of those sources directly from DVD Profiler, and it includes support for all Sony multi-disc changers using infrared and TCP/IP commands. Finally, my goto 4K player is the mighty Xbox 1. When I want to blow the roof off visually and audibly. Atmos, 4K, UHD, the whole ball of wax. 13 speakers including 4 subwoofers and 4 Atmos bouncers. So, there you go! That's me! | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

| Posted: | | | | sorry for typing in German. English is not a problem at all I noticed that Chrome shows me all the posts in my language, even the ones I previously wrote in English, so I thought it was a general option on this website.
I have 2 Synology Diskstations with a total of 30TB of storage, so no Windows PC has to be running 7/24.
Where can I find your plugin "LoadDVD" and what to say about "makemkv" see below? |

Details on how to get them, how to use them, bug and fixes, etc are all topics. I will leave to someone else to discuss makemkv. It's a global forum. Love it!!! | | | Thanks for your support.
