I tested My Movies for Windows and found that it wasn't suitable for me.
- Import was really slow. Importing 6500 titles would take forever.
- About 10% of the titles in my test run failed to import, mostly - but not only - those with disc id.
- I am totally dependent on collection number in order to find anything. Those don't get imported.

My Movies imports cast and crew from IMDb. I don't know if they have a license to do that. Many people are probably content with IMDb data. However I know that many Profiler users would not go for that.

On the plus side My Movies use SQL Server. Well, some may not consider that a plus, but presumably it means that it would be possible to write queries directly against the local database. I did not investigate that further.

Indeed, importing takes time - it imports not only the titles, but also your personal data, and doing the matches and creations does take time. It is intended as a one-time conversion - it is not intended to be used for a situation where you continue to use DVD Profiler and frequently re-import. Overall, I do not see it as a huge problem that it can take a lot of time, but granted, it does, especially with 6000 titles - you can start it and get back to it later.

While we could, we do not match against the profiles that are based on disc ids - from what we have found, that is almost always used for child titles of box sets, and rarely on actual individual release titles, which would have a barcode. The child titles of box sets should be imported when present, but it indeed does look like its import errors - importing these disc id based titles would often result in double titles. But perhaps this is a place where importing can be improved - I would like a example file to investigate it.

There are going to be profiles which does not exist in our service, just as there for sure will be many titles that would not be in the DVD Profiler service if a new user comes in with 6000 titles - how many will depend on the country, where US and UK users would see very few, users in countries with fewer users would find more. As a comparison, DVD Profiler shows a total of around 844,000 titles where we have around 1,235,000. There can be other reason for lack of matches, such as having selected to import only from a certain country and not having accepted results for other countries, but having some imported titles.

Specifically for Sweden we have around 43,000 titles vs. a little over 22,100 in DVD Profiler, so overall, the coverage should be better when adding new titles.

Collection Numbers was not imported some years ago, but they should be with the latest updates of the importing, if they are not, that is a bug that should and can be fixed.

Cast and crew importing is an option (which we ideally would like to get rid of - it does not exist on Mac or mobile apps, but is a thing of the past in the Windows version) - the data is not in any way tied to IMDB, and this is only used for cast and crew, just as I believe there are a tool for this in DVD Profiler - you can add manually, and you are always very welcomed to adjust incorrect listings. We have with latest versions of the software added generic movie profiles to use for digital copies, and each disc title profile maps to such movie profile - it gives an option in latest software versions to inherit cast and crew from the movie profile, meaning that cross-country disc title releases and different editions do not need to have the cast list adjusted individually - it makes more sense to maintain it once. I am not sure how DVD Profiler users specifically works with cast and crew and multiple releases, but a lot of copy and paste I expect?

What for you is a plus side on the SQL Server, it is actually something we would like to get rid of, because 95% or more of the problems and support we have on the software is based on installation problems and problems with SQL Server after Windows updates, ect. :-)

Overall, on importing - as we need to match existing profiles to profiles in our service, there is always going to be something that you need to adjust after an import, and therefore it will always be something you use to convert one time, and not ongoing - I am not going to say that this is an import and be done with it task, but overall, it should be a very good starting point. If there are titles which are not available in our service, we have the options of reporting missing titles (if one does not prefer to create and contribute).

Anyone who does not find the import to live up to their expectations are much welcomed to ask us to take a look at it based on examples - if there is something that should be adjusted, we can do that.

I have double checked the importer, and:

- Collection numbers are imported from the XML file.
- Titles with disc ids are imported if present in our service. There can be situations where they get marked as "Already added" if they are child titles to a box set, which is the most common, and the title already have been added.

If you say so, I didn't see them. I saw some other number next to the title in the list, but it didn't match my collection number. Maybe it was somewhere else that I didn't notice.

Still, at the present I'm too heavily invested in DVD Profiler to change to another program, unless it offered very significant advantages. That's not to say that there is anything essentially wrong with My Movies. If DVD Profiler for some reason becomes unusable in the future I might well chose My Movies as a replacement.

I tried using MyMovies recently for Windows and iOS.

I think the iOS side of things is really great, but the Windows side was almost unusable for me. The application was dreadfully slow at doing anything at all. A real shame.

Maybe something is wrong on my end, I dunno.

This should be the collection numbers - it is at least what is written in the DVD Profiler XML as the collection numbers. If you get back to it at some point and would like for us to look at it, we will certainly do that.

I totally understand that it is difficult to migrate when having invested a lot of time in what you currently use - and I think for those relying only on the Windows side of DVD Profiler, it is still a good choice, as long as the service is running - the mobile applications on the other hand appears abandoned and updates generally appear months after even critical crashes and issues comes up...

I'm just trying it again now. It's "Loading Titles" at the moment 1193 films in my collection.

It's loading 1 title about every 15 seconds or so. Is that normal?

That is not normal, no - is that the import, or syncing to the app?

It's syncing from online I suppose, from my account.

Just for giggles I installed MyMovies and tried to import my collection (123 megs). As a Windows-10-generated zip (14 megs) I get this:

When trying to upload the XML (123 megs) I get this:

When I upload to my website, the XML can be uploaded in less than two minutes:

And I got this email:

The zipped file is the correct one when it is this big - you are most likely affected by an issue in DVD Profiler where the XML is malformed XML due to some special character in a title - we have seen that quite some times.

If you contact our support on [email protected], we can typically locate where by sending it though a parser.

Why it occurs we do not know, but our best guess is that the XML is not build with a real XML parser.

Last week I also got a subscription at MyMovies, just in case. The Interface and layout could use some smoothing. I think DVD profiler is a dying program. So I will be using both next to each other.

I am also trying it out. The Mac OS version that is. Takes some getting use to, but seems to have the most important features that I want. Having trouble setting up TV episodes at the moment but that's probably me, not the program. Guess I'll figure it out eventually.

A major concern for me at the moment is that I have had to force close the application at least 5 times after setting something (most often a TV episode) to "watched". The window where you fill the date, person and the other information in refuses to close. Pressing Enter says data has already been entered and pressing Cancel doesn't close the window either. And also no red, orange and green dot te be seen. Only way to continue is to restart after force closing.

Anyone else having this program on the Mac version?

I am getting awfully uncomfortable with the highjacking of this thread. If you must, please start a new thread such as "How do we go on without DVD Profiler?"

Importing to MyMovies worked fine for me but unfortunately none of my profiles with disc id (child profiles without UPC) were recognized, and there are a lot...
