So far the VLC Player did a good job playing DVDs on my computer to write down cast & crew. But the one I just wanted to handle doesn't play. And yes: I am up to date, have the most acutal version of the program but it still doesn't.
It's the series "Helden auf vier Pfoten" (OT: Extraordinary Dogs), and none of both discs won't play.

Alternatively I created a backup (folders as well as ISO-image) with DVDShrink but even any of those is possible to be played.

So my next thaught was to ask VLC for support. But I allready failed in creating an account as both ways to do their Two Factor Authentication seem to request a mobile phone - and I am (most times) happy to live without one. What means this way there is also no chance for any support.

And before I download several player programs with the same results, I hope one of you could name me one he has VERY good experiences with. Until today VLC was kind of a "holy grail" for me as it played absolutely everything. Not to forget to mention: On DVD Player on TV the discs run fine, but as the computer is in a separate room I won't write down the data on paper in front of the TV to type it into profiler later on at the computer.

Never before had a problem like this - but at least then I found a way for support.

Are you sure your PC dvd-player's region is set to the region of the DVD? I mean really, not just 'not set yet'?

If you've made a back-up in folders, have you tried playing VLC directly from the back-up? Just open the VTS******.VOB file in the the VIDEO_TS folder).

For other free players, there is Laewo:
https://www.leawo.com/blu-ray-player/

There is also KM player, though the last time I tried it it installed of lot of rubbish too, so be forewarned:
https://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/

If you have Nero for burning CD's, your license may also include the right to download their BluRay/DVD player.

@mreeder50: Too many bad experiences with the WMPlayer... won't try it anymore

@specise_8472: Potplayer has the same problem as the others before: It shows to "start" the disc but the screen remains black.

@eommen: I can't setup this in the player but it's set up in windows for the drive. And as drive and disc are both Region 2, it should work (it did at countless others before). Leawo is just for BluRays, doesn't play DVD. According KMPlayer: Tried it within the last view days and also during "playing" nothing else than a black screen.

I can't count the apps anymore I installed for a try - never had any DVD like this one before not playable with ANY tool. I am not sure how many hours I've allready wasted but this may cause that I am not interested in cast & crew of this series anymore. Sorry!

@mreeder50: I wanted to give the WMPlayer a try.... well: I am still on Windows 8.1 and that Windows doesn't include a DVD Player tool. I only can buy this at Microsoft for "only" 15 bucks.... And as there is no guarantee, that WMPlayer will run the problemous DVD then, I'll avoid to waste money for Microsoft ;-)

It sounds like that they're using some weird copy-protection mechanism that confuses PC video players - probably on purpose.

Have you tried running AnyDVD or Passkey and then try to play it in VLC?

You could download a free trial of Cyberlink PowerDVD to see if that works.
Thanks for your support.

@DJ Doena: I can't remember all the tools I've allready used. Some of them I only recognized after installing them for the 2nd time. The Joke is: I could rip them without any problem with several free tools which don't do that if the discs are copy protectet. That's confusing!

@mediadogg: I got the Cyberlinkg DVD Suite and even their player doesn't work for those discs.

Meanwhile I need to say: I've wasted several hours with searching for freeware, installing, trying successless and unstalling again. Meanwhile I have reached a point to say: Cast & Crew are not worth that load of work - especially as there is still no result.

And before I try more tools, I'll probably do it oldschool and write down the data on paper in front of the TV. If I would have done this (as I tried to avoid) I might be finished with the data but might have spent less time...

The worst in this case is the so called "support" of VLC (and even VLC Plus only shows a black screen) and the not existing change to create an account at them without having a mobile phone. Sorry to say but THAT SUCKS!

If this is a physical disc, try it on a set-top DVD player, or another DVD drive on your computer.  If it still doesn't play, the problem is likely with the disc.  Return it and get a refund.  If you still suspect VLC, then try another free software DVD player like this one.  But if the problem is with the disc, whether it's related to copyright protection and/or encoding issues, then no software DVD player would help.  VLC doesn't crack copyright protection, and doesn't fix encoding problems on a disc that is improperly authored.

Just for your information: There's no VLC Plus, that software is scam and has no connection to VLC and its developers. The only website to download and ask for support is https://www.videolan.org.

@movie_madness: I won't try any other software anymore. I did it with at least 10 different programs and all of them only showed me a black screen for the DVD. It works on any DVD-Player but not on computer, so no chance for any refund. Especially our local rules: As soon as the wrap is open, there's no more chance to give it back. They started this rule a long time ago as it seemed to happen that people "bought" a DVD on day 1, made a copy at home and returned it with any claim the next day to get back their money...

@Stargamer: VLC Plus is from another free german group (https://www.vlc.de). But I had me before mentioned problems with the official VLC support: no chance to get support without an account at their site but no chance to to create one without a mobile phone.

There are still enough other profiles to do, so those dogs will have to wait. Maybe someone else owns the discs, too, and has more success playing it on computer and doing the data? On my ToDo-List it went down VERY far... :-)

Instead of writing all the credits down, you should take pictures of the credits on your TV screen.

Some discs can’t be seen by some computer drives. Perhaps try plugging in an external drive of another manufacturer.

I know. And that is why i told you that. There is no group or any developer at vlc.de. It's just a one-man-company that trys to make money by installing additional software on your computer. So i suggest you ran an antivirus/ad-ware scanner to get rid of any additional software you unknowingly installed.

For official VLC support go to the VLC Forums. There's no need of two-factor-authentification, only the bug tracker needs it. And as far as i can see it, there's no need for a mobile phone, you can use the LastPass browser extension.

Any way to share the full ISO (no shrinkage or other tampering ) image of one of the discs? Sounds like too juicy a problem to pass up.
